I GOT THIS RADIO FROM A CUSTOMER BETWEEN 1.
HE TOLD ME HE OWNED IT FOR AROUND 5 YEARS AND HE THOUGHT THE FELLOW HE PURCHASED IT FROM HAD IT FOR ABOUT 5 YEARS.
THE HOUSE THAT SITS ON 13 WESTOVER STREET IN CALDWELL NJ WAS UP FOR SALE LAST YEAR SO I RESEARCHED THE PROPERTY RECORDS AND FOUND THAT IT WAS BUILT IN 1928.
SO THIS MAY MEAN THAT THE COMPANY THAT WAS ON THAT PROPERTY MAY HAVE BEEN THERE PRIOR TO THAT DATE

Mr. Kornblau,
We are working on your request. So far, we have checked a local (Montclair, Bloomfield, Caldwell) directory from 1925. The only information we have acquired is that there are no advertisers in this directory for a M.R. Grant Co. At that address (13 Westover Ave.) it lists a Mrs. Harriet Grant, widow of J Fred Grant. You might want to check with the West Caldwell Public Library, which is a bigger institution and has more historical material than do we. That library is at 30 Clinton Road, West Caldwel, N.J. 07006, , and their website is: westcaldwell.bccls.org. If we find out any more information we will certainly email you.
Thank you.

Mr Kornblau,
Yes. I looked up by address which lists Mrs. Harriet Grant (Caldwell). Then I looked up by name (Grant, Harriet) and found that it confirmed that she (head of household) lives at 13 Westover Ave. (but it says West Caldwell at that listing). There is currently nothing more that I can find.

Hi Harvey,
Yes I did receive the photos.all very small.hahaha. However, they dont tell me much more than before. It still looks like a radio made in the 20s of a 3-stage TRF design. I cant tell if it is commercially built or home built, like from a kit.
Sorry I cannot be of more help.
Harvey:
My friend , from the New Jersey Antique Radio
Club, forwarded your email to me. I don't claim to be an authority or an
expert, but I can provide a little information for you, and I hope it will
be a help.
I looked in "The Radio Collector's Directory and Price Guide" by Robert
Grinder and George Fathauer. All that's shown there is that the Rita De
Lux radio was made by H. R. Grant Co. No other information. This is no
doubt one of the many small companies that "came and went" during the
1920s. Many of them were startup companies that began in someone's garage
or basement and never went any farther.
I would estimate that your radio was made between about 1922 and 1927. In
1927, manufacturers started making radios that operated from house current,
and production of battery-operated radios declined greatly, although some
were still made for rural areas where there was no electric service.
I'm glad you thought to research the property records of 13 Westover Street
in Caldwell NJ. Most people wouldn't have thought to do so. You may find
a clue as to the manufacturer in the County Clerk's Office in the county
where Caldwell is located. It's somewhat like doing genealogy. You have
to find a known owner, look up the deed, and see who he bought the property
from. Then you have to find out who that owner bought the property from,
until you come to whoever owned the property between 1922 and 1928. It's
very possible that H. R. Grant owned the property at the time. Tax records
might give a clue as to what the property was used for, but if it was a
"garage" operation, it might be listed only as a residential property.
I've done this kind of research, and it's not hard to do, once you get used
to it. And there are usually professional searchers working in the office,
and they're usually glad to give advice to a non-professional.
The usual 3-dial TRF radio & the glass case on yours makes it interesting, and should make it more valuable.
I've only seen two other radios in glass cases: one that belonged to one of
my friends and had no manufacturer's name, and another, about 10 years ago,
on display in the window of the hardware store in Wurtsboro. The store was
closed at the time, and I wasn't able to get close enough to see if there
was a name on it.
Judging by the construction, I think your radio was factory-built. If it
was a kit, it was assembled by someone who really knew what he was doing.
Kit radios had a tendency not to survive very long. So many of the
assemblers did poor work and the radios didn't play well, so the parts were
removed for other projects (which probably didn't work well, either).
Now for the terminals: I'll just go over the ones you weren't able to
read. #1 should be A- and B-. #3 is probably B+, 45 volts. #11 should be
for the antenna. If you hook up the radio to work on it, please remember
that the tubes were designed for a maximum of 5 volts on their filaments
(A). They were usually used with a 6-volt car battery, and there's a
rheostat in the filament circuit to control the filament voltage. The rule
for those tubes is to use the lowest filament voltage possible, consistent
with good performance. This prolongs the life of the filament. This was
important in the 1920s because those tubes were expensive. It's even more
important today because the tubes are getting more and more scarce, hence
more and more expensive ($57.00 each, last time I checked).
If I can be of any further help, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Best---

Dear Mr. Kornblau:
We have retrieved and looked through "Radio manufacturers of the 1920's" Alan Douglas (Vestal, N.Y.: Vestal Press, c1988-c1991. 3 v.) but there is no mention of M. R. Grant Company Radios.
We then looked through a series of indexes: "How it works: Incorporating "Perpetual Trouble Shooter's Manual" published by John F. Rider Publisher, Inc. We have identified a number of models of radios manufactured by the
W.T. Grant Co.
1441 Broadway
New York 18, N.Y.
(also referred to as Grantline)
Could you check your radio to see if it is manufactured by the W.T.Grant Co. instead of M.R.Grant Co.? We have identified a number of models (all of which are numbers and none are the RITA or RITA Deluxe) for the W.T. Grant company but nothing by the M.R. Grant Co.
We have also looked through the SAMS publishing indexes but in general SAMS is for newer radios. The following Grantline radios are listed on the SAMS website:
.
There are web sites for antique radios. We searched at
but can only identify the W.T. Grant models. This site has RITA models by Helvar in Finland with a sample:

and by Pawerphon in Germany with a sample:
.
This is the best that we can identify, even with the detailed information that you have provided to us. Should you have additional information or comments please feel free to write back and we would be happy to search again with the new information.

Dear Mr. Kornblau,
Your question has been forwarded from American Memory to the Science Reference Section.
We will look through our SAMS "Photofact Folder" index and well as through "Radio Manufacturers of the 1920's" for the Model "Rita Deluxe" by Grant Co. If you have a model number please reply with that number. We will reply in more detail after we have looked through the above and related materials.
Best regards,
